Drywall Calculator
Drywall Calculator
Estimate drywall sheets, coverage, waste, screws and material cost for a room.

How Many Drywall Sheets Do I Need?
The calculator estimates the surface area of the room walls and optionally the ceiling. Openings can be subtracted before the waste allowance is added.
How the Drywall Calculation Works
Wall area is estimated using the room perimeter:
Wall Area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height
If the ceiling option is selected, ceiling area is added using:
Ceiling Area = Length × Width
Common Drywall Sheet Sizes
| Sheet Size | Sheet Area |
|---|---|
| 4 × 8 ft | 32 ft² |
| 4 × 10 ft | 40 ft² |
| 4 × 12 ft | 48 ft² |
Example
For a 12 ft by 10 ft room with 8 ft walls, the gross wall area is 352 ft². If the 120 ft² ceiling is included and 60 ft² of openings are subtracted, the net surface is 412 ft².
After a 10% waste allowance, approximately 453 ft² of drywall coverage should be planned.
Drywall Screws
The screw result is only a rough material-planning estimate. Actual screw spacing depends on sheet thickness, framing, ceiling or wall installation and code requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Large openings can be subtracted to improve the area estimate, although the surrounding cuts can still create waste.
Larger sheets can reduce joints but are heavier and may be harder to handle. Choose based on framing, room dimensions and installation conditions.
